Blog

About my blog For those that don't know, a "blog" is short for "weblog". My blog is a collection of some of my thoughts, rants, random facts, gadgets and links that I've come across which I think others may find intriguing... sometimes I'll put some more personal entries. Though the purpose of this blog isn't so that people can find out intimidate details about my life, more just a place to find some interesting tidbits to read.

the blog

12.31.2006 - Thoughts and Discoveries from the US( 0 comments ) Wow.. Internet is SO slow on dial-up. Seriously, we're staying in what we call the Westgate Ghettos.. not quite as nice as the pictures and no internet on site! Even shady motels, McDonalds and other fast food restaurants like Krystal have wireless internet.

Part 1 - Random Thoughts..
Anyways onto some random thoughts, I'll do my 2006 recap blog later on..
1) Finish Well - back to the grocery cart lady (see previous post). If you've spent 10-15 minutes grabbing everything you need, why would you abandon the cart? Why not finish and bring everything home.. it doesn't matter if you hit a shelf, dropped some eggs, almost hit a crippled man.... you should still check out your groceries.

2) Volleyball Withdrawal - last night I dreamed I was playing and made some spectacular digs. I woke up happy, then realized I couldn't have possibly played, as my ankle isn't fully healed! I think I need to play soon.. or keep dreaming everynight and wake up disappointed.

3) Ghetto US Restaurants - Golden Corral, some serious ghettoness.. who heard of a buffet/sit-down place where you had to pre-pay to enter? must be a lot of scammers who sneak out? Anyways this is the sign they had in front.. (pic below). I was seriously perplexed. How is it convenient for us? It's like charging admission to a restaurant. Anyways there was this area by the buffet that smelled like washroom, trust me.. I checked with my sister and bro-in-law.. they both agreed.

4) Boxing Day: Where are the asians? - Haven't been boxing day shopping in years since I'm normally not in the country... anyways I lined up in Richmond Hill on boxing day. The proportion of asian people was a lot lower than expected, guess we're not tough enough to line-up really early .. the lineup turned out to be prob 200 ppl before it opened at 6am?

Part 2 - Random Discoveries
1) iPod Vending machines - saw this at the outlet mall.. crazy.. make sure to watch the youtube clip with some overly excited guys. They had another machine next to it selling cosmetics.. I think? took a pic with my camera phone. (links: video, article)

2) Lost Clothes - you know how you sometimes can't find that shirt or pants? Here's one place to look.. my sis and I were hanging out, then my bro-in-law comes in with a pair of sweatpants..
a) he says they don't fit him and that they probably shrunk in the wash.
b) my sis looks at them, then says it's hers! haha.. ok.. that explains it.
c) I take a closer look at them, and realized the sweatpants are mine!
**proof **
- they're size large, without debate, my sis agreed that she doesn't wear this size. anyone who debates this.. umm.. be prepared to face the wrath of my sis..
- I remember the placement of the nike swoosh on the bottom pant leg near the hemming.
d) I decided not to take them back, they've disappeared for years.. I've already gotten replacements..

3) Transformers The Movie
- new trailer is out.. looks pretty good! (link). While I'm at it.. here's a random "Transformer" related commercial.

4) Timothy's Gingerbread Vanilla Hot Chocolate
- wow.. this stuff is addictive. Mind you it's super sweet... definetly a great discovery...

12.29.2006 - The Dangers of Grocery Shopping( 0 comments ) I never really thought grocery shopping could be dangerous.. that was until last weekend. I went with bubboteaboy to the Loblaws at Bayview Village to help him pickup a few items for his christmas baking (I still wasn't very mobile with the whole ankle business).  For some reason when bubboteaboy and I hang out, we come into some dangerous situations.. not quite as bad as the car one at Demetre's but still scary..

So onto the story....part 1.. . bubboteaboy and I were in the aisle debating on what package of peanuts matched the "unsalted roasted peanuts" in the ingredients list. When all of a sudden we heard a crash followed by a whole bunch of noise of things falling (rather unexpected in a supermarket). We both turn around and see this (it's the aftermath, didn't get a photo of the actual person):

ok, so you're probably thinking it doesn't look like that big of a mess. However, this woman literally ran into the shelf head-on, completely emptying the bottom half of the shelf. I didn't give much thought to this incident because really, accidents happen, let's look beyond that.

THEN Part 2.... we turn around back to take care of our own business, the lady recovers from the incident and starts headed down the aisle towards us. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a shopping cart whizzing inches from my right leg, so I jump away from it. I think I said to her, "be careful!  you almost hit my sprained ankle!".  I was expecting a  "sorry" or something along those lines, but instead, I got one of the coldest stares I've ever seen, followed by a, "you shouldn't be standing where you were in the aisle" and she continues walking down the aisle. I was in utter shock.. I think I replied back a few seconds later, "You'd better watch where you're going, you don't want to hit anymore things today".. geeze.. what a smart alleck response.. I'm still wondering whether I muttered something about "drinking and shopping".. anyways not my proudest moment, but I'm still senstive of anyone hurting my already busted up ankle... so the story should end here, but there's more....

Part 3.. The End ...  bubboteaboy and I picked the peanuts we needed.. then proceeded down the aisle saw a shopping cart left there and it seemed someone had accidentally dropped their eggs. We just assumed that they went to get someone to go clean it up....  but we assumed wrong. Upon closer look at the cart, we realized there were about 10 packages of scotch tape in them (see top left of bottom shelf of cart in photo). This was the same shopping cart of the lady who hit the shelf and almost hit me! (see previous photo.. half the shelf was scotch tape). So she abandoned it after another incident. My conclusion is.. she hit something else, the eggs dropped and she abandoned her cart there....  and I reflect back on what I said to her, "you don't want to hit anymore things today".

ironic.

ok, so it's an interesting story.. though seriously, she must've had a really bad day or had a lot on her mind. Christmas can be a pretty stressful time of the year, but one thing I don't understand is why she left her shopping cart.. especially if she needed to buy all those things. I guess I'll never know.

Anyways moral of the story - shopping at christmas can be dangerous!

ok..onto some random links..
1. Prototype Toyota Electric Car - much better looking than the Prius.. ok, prob because it's a couple. more pics here as well.
2. New Years Countdown - this webpage is amazing.. such brilliant design.. watch the countdown.....

4. 2006 Best Inventions - from Time.com....
5. New Activity for your company's next team meeting? - okay.. our company actually hired these guys for our last team meeting.. it was pretty interesting having everyone act this stuff out.. it was pretty hilarious..
6. Burger King Video Games? - Don't believe it? read here... Burger King is selling video games along with burgers... but they look pretty entertaining, like some of the new Nintendo Wii games.
7. IceHotel! - located in Sweden.. wow.. this place looks pretty good.. and some fabulous pics. Here's the description, "The main restaurant of the famed Ice Hotel chain is, oddly enough, not made of ice. But they do serve meals on plates made from the ice of the Torne River, which borders Sweden and Finland. Elk and reindeer appear frequently on the restaurants winter menu. "

that's all for now...... enjoy! more to come...

12.18.2006 - How'd it break?( 0 comments )
** Exhibit A **
IMG_0285 (Medium)
Wow, it's been ages since I posted.. still adding pictures. Yes, the picture above (exhibit A) is my active ankle brace, and yes it's broken. A lot of you have already seen me hobbling around on crutches.. I didn't think I'd ever sprain my ankle again since I wear my Active Ankle braces ALL the time when I play. Their slogan is "Play without Fear" .. which I bought into, until now. Anyways basically freak accident, landed on someone's foot, during the fall, the ankle brace broke, I sprained my ankle. Seriously though, I think if this didn't break, my ankle probably would've. Another view of the brace - see Exhibit B... The sprain was a lot more seroius than I thought, but it's gotten a lot better the last day or so. Thankfully I had a good physiotherapist, but she asked me to come 5 times over the last week.. .. it was *that* bad...

** Exhibit B **
IMG_0287 (Medium)

Anyways to top off the sprained ankle, went in for dental surgery today (on my crutches), so in addition to icing my ankle, I'm now icing my face. I knew to keep 4 icepacks in my fridge for good reason! .. anyways so I won't be eating well lately, dinner tonight is a bottle of Aloe Vera drink and a bottle of Boost! All I can say is December has been a lot of ups and downs... some really good times (like this weekend)... but some really hard times (also this weekend)..

Ok, I'll finish off this short post with some random links as usual..

11.17.2006 - Adventure with Cars( 0 comments ) 20061116-CarAd

ok, so I'm trying to include a picture with every post.. I'm sure this one caught everyone's attention. Found it in today's Metro (Pg 7) and immediately knew it was good for today's post. Read on for more details on why this related to today's post.. Justin - I'm sure you'll appreciate this one and know exactly where I'm goign with this one..

I've had a few exciting car incidents the last few weeks.. well
actually these all occured within a week. Some people are really
careless when they drive, so I have a few quick guidelines and
examples from my dangerous week.

1) Pedestrians Have Right of Way - I'm crossing the
road, there's a woman walking next to me. A car approaches for a right
turn very quickly, stops suddenly. We both stop, pause and start
walking again. Suddenly the car starts up and continues the right turn coming directly at us. Woman yells
at the car, the car went right by me. I kick the car (it came *that* close to me).

2) You have to leave your foot on the brake - Same
intersection as #1, I'm crossing the road. As I pass by the car, the
van pickup truck inches forward slowly.. and keeps coming at me. I jump
to the side, the guy in the car is to busy looking in the passenger
seat area and doing all this other stuff. I look back in disbelief...
he sees me and is embarassed. Thank goodness for good peripheral vision.

3) One thing at a time - okay, I saved the best for last. Mississauga is a rough
place, especially Courtney Park AMC. I'm pulling up to an intersection
in the parking lot, for some reason I slow down early approaching the
stop sign, probably about 2 car lengths away. A car comes in from the
left, and makes a very wide right hand turn.. usually they reach the
peak of their 'wide turn' and go back into their lane (which is what I
expected). Not this time.. I look in horror as I reach for my horn as
they come straight towards us head-on (right now my car is stopped..
Justin who's in the passenger seat is probably wondering why there is
so much car drama in his life).

As I'm staring through our windshield at their windshield.. we
realize we can't see their faces. Why? Because they're making out as
they come speeding towards my car. He barely stops in time after
hearing the horn.. the girl looks up in shock. I'm in total disbelief..
they apologize.. and I go park.

So the moral of the story: While driving, do not make out while making a right hand turn. One thing at a time. There's a time and place for everything.

Oh Wait, it gets better. So we were going to Demetrie's.. I think I
muttered to Justin - they're probably going to the same place as we
are. Minutes after we're seated, the waiter leads a couple to sit right
by us and we recognize them. The girl immediately asks the waitress to
seat them over at the other side of the restaurant....

11.12.2006 - Borat - "14A" or "R"( 0 comments )

Went to go see it earlier tonight... I'd heard some
comments about how graphic and crude some of the scenes were. One
person even suggested that I NOT go see it. So I seriously thought
about not going.. when I got there it seems everyone was set on going
to it, so I went along. While buying the ticket, I saw the rating as
"14A", and my exact thought was, "if a 14 year old can watch it, it
can't really be THAT bad". Fast forward 2 hrs.. some scenes were
excessively graphic and long. Mind you there were some pretty humourous
parts, but as I got out of the movie, I didn't leave feeling overly
happy. I hadn't been to a movie theatre in months.. so I expected more.

It bothered me enough that I went back to check what the heck these ratings mean so here's what I found.

- Borat - Rated "14A" in Canada, Rated "R" in the States.

- 14A Rating in Canada - Some of the main points - "Parents cautioned. May contain
violence, coarse language and/or sexually suggestive scenes
". (
http://www.ofrb.gov.on.ca/english/page13.htm)

- R Rating in the US - "This signifies that the rating board has concluded that the film rated contains
some adult material.
Parents are urged to learn more about the
film before taking their children to see it. An R may be assigned due to,
among other things, a film's use of language, theme, violence, sex or its
portrayal of drug use."

I seroiusly think some of the
Borat scenes are way overboard and
fall more under the category of "18A", well at least the ONE wrestling scene..
but maybe it only falls under "suggestive" - "Parents
strongly cautioned.
Will
likely contain explicit violence, frequent coarse language, sexual
activity and/or horror.
"
Seriously
though, after not having watched TVs or Movies for a few months, I
guess I've been re-sensitized. Either way, I'm going to have to give a
lot more thought into what I decide to watch from now on.. this was definetly not a "must-see" movie.. however, I will admit the film is cleverly crafted, really shows a lot about Americans and who they are... "documentary style".

11.04.2006 - The Sign of Change( 1 comments )
Photo_062006_001

Ok, so the photo's kinda lame and it's a bit of a pun, but I wanted to include a pic with every post.. following after Viv. It's been a long long time since I've posted on here, or even posting comments for that matter. Anyways, I moved a few months ago from a townhouse to a 1 bedroom condo.. one of the many changes that has happened in the last few months. I thought I'd changed a lot since I came to Westside three years ago.. but God always has his way of changing us even more, teaching us more and growing us in all those areas we neglect, ignore or have been overlooked. Over the last few months, I've been challenging myself (and have been challenged by others) to change a few things in my life and below are a few things that I've learned.. I'm also inspired to see others like KeeSun challenging themselves to live a disciplined life.... so here goes:
1) TV - When I moved, I decided to stop subscribing to cable tv. My life was getting too hectic so I needed to cut something out. TV was the first to go. Traded my 32" Sony for a 19" RCA.. I haven't watch a tv since I moved in mid-August. I remember earlier in the year I was sharing with my Sunday Small Group that I wanted to cut down from watching my favorite shows CSI, CSI NY, CSI Miami, Lost, Smallville, Numb3rs, ering, desperate housewives, prison break. I've been set free...
Lesson I learned: TV takes up a lot of time, but I can actually live without it....
2) Possessions - I didn't really consider myself materialistic.. however when moving I realized that I have a ton of stuff! Got rid of a lot of stuff now, but need to get rid of even more! I've learned that less is more .. and one of my sunday small group members has been keeping me accountable to throw all of it out. It's not so much I wanted more, I just kept a lot of stuff and in that, spent a lot of time organizing, taking care of it and whatever. None of the things I own are really that important.. and I don't need anymore of it.
Lesson: Stop buying anymore stuff unless it's to replace something that's old, broken or absolutely needed. Materialism isn't about always wanting the newest and better things, it just as distracting if you own too much stuff!
3) Time -Time is my biggest obstacle nowadays, and it seems I always have stuff to do. Some days I feel like I have the workload of 2-3 jobs and that I stay up late a lot. Sleeping at 1:30-2am is almost a regular thing... however, like the analogy of the aquarium being filled with big rocks, pebbles, sand and water, if you put all the bigger things in first, like the big rocks, than the pebbles, sand and then water, everything will fit. However, the judge of what's big or small should be from a kingdom perspective, not our own personal agenda.
Lesson: Put God first, and somehow everything else that's important seems to fit together and come into place.. and it's more than coincidence.
4) Community - my perspective on the church community has changed a lot over the last few months, from co-leading the Sunday Small Group with Karen, to the Willowcreek trip... I've come to realize how important it is... even with all the growing pains and challenges that come with it, I've witnessed the amazing changes that can happen in people's lives... and for myself, I can only grow so much without community..
Lesson: Build a community filled with God's Love and let God's Love do it's work.... and that I also need God's Love through our community..

I'll leave it at this for now.... there's a few more things I want to write but it's getting late... until next time (not sure when that's going to be).. for all the CVA peeps, hope you're enjoying the season.. can't wait until tomorrow night for another fun-filled/exciting night!

and one last thing, the new Starfield & Chris Tomlin CDs are amazing.. I strongly recommend both of them.. a friend lended me the Starfield CD and it has slowly become one of my favorite cds *ever*!

9.04.2006 - Volleyball... How it all started for me..( 1 comments ) Wow, almost a month since I've posted. I meant to post this a few weeks ago, but just hadn't made time. (Jon, sorry if you've been checking since then, I know I told you to check this site). So it's 7am, I'm wide awake, no work... this means it's finally time for some Xanga. John Kim, to answer your question - no, I'm not on a Xanga fast, just a lot has been going on.. and with each day even more challenges seem to be coming up.

So, with all the organizing for CVA League and vball at church, I was reflecting back on how it all started. After much thinking, I realize it all started with one man, my friend Jon Lau. So what did Jon do that was so remarkable? It's quite simple.. encouragement.

The story goes like this.. summer after Grade 8, I was in the hospital with an appendecitis. After that, in Grade 9, I tried out (and made) the highschool soccer team (this used to be my favorite sport). This was the first highschool team I ever tried out for, so I was pumped. Warm-ups would usually involve laps around the field, but somehow with the surgery, I couldn't run continously for more than 1/4 of the field. Short sprints were ok, but nothing more. So I ended up quiting the team, because I knew I couldn't play my best and that I was taking up a spot on the team. That was a sad, sad day...

So I was a bit bummed out that week, but it was at that time Jon encouraged me to try out for the volleyball team with some of our other friends. I thought it was a completely ridiculous idea, but really... I didn't have anything better to do as an extracirricular. So I went to the tryouts... and actually made the team. I honestly think they only picked me because I could jump pretty high and they thought they could eventually teach me to hit the ball. So many years later... I'm the volleyball player I am today, simply because Jon encouraged to join the team.

If you ask me what I remember from highschool volleyball, other than a few big plays and hits, it was Jon encouraging me during games, practices and even academics. It's no surprise that he was captain of our volleyball team and a Brother in Christ. There's a few things I've learned from Jon that I will never forget.... there's another story I want to share about him, but I'll probably wait to the next post.

Jon - come back from Calgary and join us in the t-dot! Visit us at Westside!

And I said I'd try to include pictures with my posts from now on, so now a blast from the past..... (no links this post, but I have a bunch saved up..)

8.06.2006 - TKPC Tourney Champs! and more links as usual..( 7 comments ) I think it's been ages since I've posted on here.... so much has happened and I definetly won't be able to capture half the stuff here. Anyways I've decided to include photos with my entries, so here's one of the Westside team. Pretty much put together with random Westsiders and friends.. we entered the TKPC Tourney not expecting much. Definetly not a dominating team by any means.. in round-robin play we squeezed by... the highlight at that point was winning the "Most Spirited Team" award... apparently people noticed that we were the only team that was really cheering for each other. Anyways after many long games, many that went to the 3rd set and really close scores, we managed to win the championship! The team chemistry really came together and everyone hustled hard.. so the championship team is below... though the victory came at a cost.. minor ankle sprain during the quarters and some serious cramping of the legs and feet.. I felt it till mid this week! Not playing 9-man this summer means I'm not in as good of a shape as I used to be.

Anyways this could be my last post for August... there seem to be a gazabillionjillion things going on. Haven't slept that much this past week.... but for some reason I don't feel the need/urge to sleep right now, guess there's a lot on my mind.. There never seems to be enough hours in the day and never enough time.. Maybe I'm over ambitious, maybe I have poor planning, maybe it's just because it's the last month of summer, or probably a combination of everything above. The last few weeks have been stressful in many different ways and I'm starting to feel maxed out.. not a good thing. To end this on a positive note though, my sis is back in town for the next month or two, she's been able to help me with a few things and it's good to see her on a day-to-day basis again, even if only for the short term.... also vacation - taking a week off in August.. hopefully I can get a lot of things done! (so not much of a vacation really).. now onto the links..

1. Night Markets - There's one in Richmond BC - went to it earlier this year.. turns out they had something similar in Toronto a few weeks ago. It's almost like a flea market....
2. Google Logo Creator - most of us see this image everyday and when it changes on special holidays on their homepage. Some articles about the guy who actually creates the logos... probably a stressful job nowadays since there's such high expectations!
3. Batman Lego - saw this in some Batman comics I recently got... haven't read ANY comics in ages but it was a good read. Though I'm wondering why on earth they didn't come out with this years ago..
4. Million Dollar Website Wannabe - I blogged about the million dollar website where the guy solds blocks of pixels as ads... here's the wannabe site, it's a lot LESS successful than the other site.
5. Transformers & TMNT Movies - I had NO idea that these two movies were coming out. When I found out about Transformers.. it made my day... not like I'm a huge transformers collector or die-hard fan or whatever... iI just played with them a lot in my childhood. Anyhow trailers are out.. take a peek!
6. Masaru Emoto - Some interesting experients involving water crystals and music/written words... not sure how well the experiment was preformed but some interesting results!

7.16.2006 - About the Shoes you wear, Northwest Territories and random facts..( 4 comments ) Alright, this post is just random facts and info from the last little while.... I've included a photo again this time. This time it's for a plate from the Northwest Territories.. not too exciting, but this was parked downtown Toronto. By the fact that it's all numbers, no letters and only 5 digits.. there probably aren't a lot of cars up there. Though I love the shape..

Photo_061506_001

1) The Shoes you wear - Read this in an article about the shoes you wear, though I don't agree with it 100%, but an interesting thought. This was about wearing flip-flops at the office, which are "beach-wear" - "Shoes convey the mood of a woman. Wearing flip-flops conveys the mood that you are relaxed and on vacation. That's not a good message in the office"
2) Commuting - Turns out in the GTA, we spend an average of 79 minutes commuting, upwards to 2 hours. 64% of public transit users spend more than an 1 1/2 hrs commuting. At 2hrs a day, tI his turns out to approximately 3 weeks of the year commuting. I did the match.. it's insane. I spend almost as much time commuting a year than I have in vacation. Something's definetly wrong here.
3) Reheating in Coffee Cups - I don't really drink coffee, but thought I'd at least mention this... came up at work. It seems that they've changed coffee cups reecently, and supposedly they now seem to have a foil liner in their base. Not really a big deal, but the warning is for people who reheat their coffee or any other beverages using these coffee cups in the microwave. Even 10 seconds can cause burning and a safety issue. I wasn't aware this was common practice.. but good to know anyways. 4) New Search Engine to replace Google? - it's pretty interesting, I like it... this one is built by Yahoo.
5) Study: Internet partly to blame for your lack of close friends - Interesting.. but I can see how this could be true...
6) Zidane Flash Game - this came out really quickly.. but who would expect any less from random people on the internet coming up with this stuff?

7.11.2006 - Harvey's New Salad!( 1 comments ) I was inspired by someone else's blog to put up a picture.. every once in a while I'll take pictures using my camera phone, so I've decided to post a few up occasionally. Anyways the story goes a little something like this.......

After Sat vball at church, a few of us were hungry and Jake had a craving for Harveys... so there's this newly renovated Harvey's on the North West corner of Burhamthorpe and Mavis. I'm not a big fan of Harvey's fries... so I order a salad along with my combo. I was trying to eat healthy by keeping away from the Caesar salad. So we sit down, pray and start eating. I pop-open my salad and there are these large vegatables on my salad... "Interesting ..." I thought... I've had Harvey's salads quite a few times but I didn't recognize it. I pick one up and I'm like.. "Hmm... it's a pickle... since when did Harveys start putting pickles in their salad?". Seconds later, I noticed chopped onions, sliced tomatoes, shredded lettuce and a huge whole in my plastic container! I didn't even know what to think.... I promptly returned to the counter, "there's something wrong with my salad.... ". and in the end... I ended up getting a Caesar salad instead of another "special salad". So in short, I guess this is known as the "Condiment Salad".. all I was missing was some ketchup, mustard and relish... normally the salad has cherry tomatoes, shredded carrots, cucumbers, lettuce leaves (not shredded)... anyways...

7.03.2006 - More Videos and Links( 1 comments ) Haven't posted in ages, but here's a few more videos and links. Anyways I normally don't post anything too personal... but I'll put up a few thoughts I've had over the past few days. I've been at Westside for almost 3 years now. .. it's amazing how much growth the church has undergone during this time. I love the people and leadership there... a truly amazing place. In addition, my priorities have changed a lot over the past few years... I find my time spent on things that are a lot different than what I used to spend it on... hardly certain things on tv anymore such as news, sports desk, or any sports game for that matter.. those are just a few small trivial things and there are others. Girls/Women/Relationships - I guess it's changed quite a bit as well... my perspective has changed... and I think for the better. I won't elaborate too much on this, because no one likes to read a 5 page essay. Lastly... I've slowly come to realize my life without my sister in town is very different.... some days I really miss it... ok, onto the links..

1. World Cup Practices - YouTube video.. inside scoop on the soccer practices

6.09.2006 - Journey to Willow( 3 comments ) Long day yesterday... this training thing for work can be pretty draining. Anyhow work is just slides, spreadsheets, some role-playing activities.. However, today I had the chance to attend the member service at Westside Community Church. Wow, it was pretty amazing, some of the events that they do there, as well as the efficiency of how they work. Everything seems to go smoothly, from the translation to sign language, communion for a 1-2 thousand people done in 5 minutes.

The message was on "Neighbourhoods" and Randy Frazee asked the question, "How well do you know your neighbours?".. and I realized I know.. maybe one of them and only through some distant relation. There's really no excuse.. it's sad. I guess part of it is due to schedules, but I won't dwell on it too long. It's made me realize that I don't see my non-church friends as much, especially over the last little while. I think I need to be a little bit more proactive.

The arrangements to get there weren't that easy... a little stressful at times. Anyhow didn't get back to the Training Campus until 10:30pm, but had I had a Steak & Shake Doubleburger to chow down on. Man, it was good. 10:30pm from church, oh wait, I didn't mention how I got lost driving by myself in the middle of the country side.... with no real map. The map I printed out only had cities and two highways labelled. NO STREET NAMES! The only thing I had to console me was a Chris Tomlin CD in the rental car. Somehow I managed to find my way back to St. Charles Illionis... after having to drive aimlessly, I managed to find my way back to the "Q Center".

Anyways I'm leaving tomorrow... there's the ritual group trip to Cadillac Ranch, some place in the middle of the boonies. We'll see how it goes.. Right now I'm enjoying "So You Think You Can Dance". This show is awesome... the judges are RUTHLESS. I'm glad the "judges" in our training weren't like them...

6.02.2006 - Random links to the Random World on the Internet( 1 comments ) Ok.. this is just as the title says.. just a collection of interesting things I kept track of when I saw them around. I've saved up a bunch so here you go..

  1. Wong Fu Wedding Video - From the makers of Yellow Fever - comes a music video based on Jason Mraz's Song - "I'm Yours", done as a wedding gift. You can see the video on YouTube and on their website. Links included to other videos, as well as "The Making Of" pictures.
  2. StreetFighter - American Dad vs.Family Guy - Remember Street Fighter? Try the same thing but with Family Guy & American Dad characters.. a flash based game.
  3. The Apprentice - Turns out some guy for my company is on the show.. supposedly one of the Finalists. Oh wait.. I think the show is over now... oh well. With 130,000 people working for our company worldwide. Someone is bound to get on the show..
  4. GTA Volleyball - Google Maps used to help benefit the volleyball community. A bunch of places to play volleyball in the GTA. While on the topic of Google & Maps, Google Calendar is out, as well as a new version of Yahoo Maps.
  5. Facebook - This is the next Friendster, Xanga, MySpace.. whatever you call them. You sign up based on your highschool, university or whatever else you've gone to... I found out that my friend Sam Pyo and I went to the same highschool, but at very different times...
  6. Photo Sharing Sites - Parazz & Riya - These are the next generation of photo galleries.. Riya - supposedly is smart enough to recognize people from the pictures, face recognition or something like that...  I've signed up for both services...
  7. Smoke Free Ontario? - Well, the new legislation is out. From what I've read, for any buildings, or business, if there's a roof overtop of you, you can't smoke in that spot. Any type of roof that is. If you're not under the roof it's ok.. you can read more by yourself at the link below.
  8. Bus Uncle (with Subtitles) - My Chinese friends sent me this (it's easier to appreciate in Chinese, but subtitles are okay).. interesting video, quite a bit of profanity though so be warned.... I can't believe they made t-shirts from this video. Sort of like the "Star Wars Kid".. if you haven't seen those videos, look it up on YouTube.com
Thoughts on TTC Strike
Okay.. I think that's enough random links. However, here's some food for thought. Most people heard know about the illegal TTC strike on Monday. All I remember is hearing that the maintenance workers wanted a raise... So along comes Thursday and what do I hear on the news? There was some problems with one of the subways today.. supposedly some panel cover fell off the bottom of the train and short-circuited the track, causing smoke and leading to the evacuation of the subway station.

Now my thought is.... isn't the job of the TTC Maintenance workers to ensure incidents like this never occur? They're asking for more money, yet this incident perhaps doesn't really go well in endorsing the quality of their work or building their credibility. My other thought is that it was blatant sabotage... Anyways I've taken the GO Train everyday this week.. avoiding the subway!

4.29.2006 - Chinese Documentary, Coffee Coke, the next Furby and more...( 1 comments ) Another bunch of links for new products, videos, and other interesting sites..

1. Documentary - A Chink in the Armour.. pretty interesting, keep in mind it's 25 minutes long. Features Terry Woo - author of the Banana Boys. I used to work with Terry... way back when we worked for an Tech Startup called Delano.. really smart and down-to-earth guy. Probably the Hamilton roots... he used to DJ.. I remember how my friend Anita (who worked at Delano at the time) ran into Terry at a Rave.... the last place you'd expect to run into a co-worker..
2. Coke Blak - A new product.. Coffee like Coke?
3. Pleo - Supposedly this is the next Furby - not as scary looking. Robots have come a long long way...
4. MooBella - Ice Cream freshly made from a vending machine..
5. Blurb - publish your own book.. you create the book electronically.. send it to them and get the hardcopy back. Anyone can publish a novel overnight now..

Anyhow as people have probably realized.. my site isn't too much about my personal life.. it's more about news, products, gadgets..

I haven't gone skating in a rink in years... I went rollerskating a little while ago, outdoor skating as well, but nothing matches indoor skating. Anyways it was a blast, Raptor's mascot was there and my friend Justin won Leafs, err.. I mean Raptor's tickets from a draw!  Anyways for pictures.. take a look below.

3.10.2006 - American Idol All-Star, Jason McElwain and U of Waterloo Grads..( 2 comments ) Two videos and some articles. 1st video - is the all-star American Idol. I don't really follow it at all, but this Elliot Yamin guy is pretty good. Watch the video, you be the judge.

Second video a lot of people have prob seen. Jason McElwain.. water boy turned all-star bball player.

Last two articles are about U of Waterloo students and grads. Looks like there are a lot of successful ones and that we're supposedly a bright bunch. My waterloo coworkers and friends pass me these articles all the time :P

- Trading Favours Online? And New Jersey( 0 comments ) Came across this in the paper. It's a website that allows people to trade favors... yet another community oriented site.. interesting concept, though I'm not sure how popular it will get. It's based entirely on trust... but I think most Canadians are trustworthy.

Secondly link is to the mall I'll be visiting. It's supposedly one of the biggest outlet malls in the US. Should be interesting.. It's called Woodbury Common Premium Outlets.

12.18.2005 - A website full of "cuteness" another full of umm.. "techiness"( 0 comments ) wow, blogged three days in a row. I'll keep this one short and simple.. came back from Tremblant, 14 hrs bus ride there, 7 hr bus ride back. On the way there I think as the storm was moving east we were driving with it all the way up to Quebec. It took me a while to figure out how to describe the trip.. then the words came to me, "DC Library". For those waterloo grads/students we know that as the place you run into everyone pretty much.. I saw people who I knew, didn't know but somewhat recognized from the library.. it felt like I was back in university again.

Anyways onto the two links.. one site was described by one of my friends as, "this site is heaven" . The other one I describe as - "interesting, but these people have too much time on their hands". Basically it's some interesting wallpapers..

11.25.2005 - Surprise her with a gift from homedepot.ca( 1 comments ) So I get this email from HomeDepot with the title, "Surprise her with a gift from homedepot.ca" .. my first thought.. yeah.. if I bought a girl a gift from Home Depot, she'd be very surprised and they'd probably get me a lump of coal for Christmas. How about a Black & Decker 18 Volt Drill Kit for $99.95. Yes, absolutely! Jenn-Air Stand Mixer for $449.99, Yes, I'll take two.

Anyhow I found the email amusing.... the message in the email goes like this, "Dream Gifts for The Super Woman. Give her the gift of inspriation. At Homedepot.ca we've got the utlimate gifts to pamper and rejuvenate her spirit this holiday season." I'm not saying that girls never go to Home Depot or use power tools though.. it's not necessarily the top of most girls's lists... and you don't go to Home Depot to get pampered and rejuvenated with powertools.

Anyhow, wanted to recommend the new Lifehouse album.. great band.. I've listened to your CD over and over again a gazillion times.

11.23.2005 - Eventful week..( 0 comments ) the last few days have been pretty interesting.. a recap.

Sunday
- Pastor Paul introduces me as the skinny single guy in front of the whole congregation. twice. My question, how can he be so sure that I was single?

- Westside Basketball - had the biggest block in my life.. can still remember it. I think I can retire from basketball now.

Monday
- The most important thing when you make an appointment is for the business to set time aside for their customer who they are expecting at the appointment time. It's a fairly common business practice, I found out the hard way that Richmond Hill Toyota doesn't know this simple practice. I called last week, they basically had Monday evening completely free so I book an appointment for regular maintenance, should take about 2 1/2 hrs. I show up 15 minutes early for my appointment at 7:45pm. It's 10pm, I look through the windows and don't even see my car in the garage. They rush my car in.. I wait... and wait.. eventually it's 12:45am and I finally get my car. 5 hrs for maintenance with an appointment. Ridiculous.. I don't think I'll ever go back.

Tues
- TD Canada Trust calls me, tells me to call them back. I get the Fraud line.. guess what, I'd been frauded. Fraudster was pretty smart, did one transaction by "ecash" for $18.25, once that went through they did a second one right away for $1200 something. Bye bye VISA Card, I'll get another one in 7 days.

- Stayed up till 2:30am on a work night finishing up a book report for a class. painful. I haven't written a paper in ages.

Wed
- I get a call from some concierge service telling me I'd won two cineplex tickets. They couldn't get a hold of the previous person so they redrew and picked Gabriel Chan. I call them back, they're looking for someone who worked at CIBC downtown.. I did for a bit.. but based on the info, I'm not the same guy. There WERE two Gabriel Chans at CIBC, but the other guy isn't there anymore so they somehow called me instead. boo...

one last tidbit
- I go to this mall almost everyday for lunch since I work nearby. I mall's a bit shady, they used to have a store called H'n'M (a bite-off of H & M), same colour logo, same style font. Two weeks after opening they're now called "U'n'M". Anyhow here's the article:

11.19.2005 - What's in a name? Congee Wong and Vball playoffs( 2 comments ) Haven't been blogging as much lately... been preoccupied with other things. Anyhow, usually my blog is just a bunch of random thoughts and links, nothing too personal, nothing too structured..

Wonder what your name is supposed to mean? I did... look below and see whether it matches your personality. It's surprising that there's a lot of similarities usually. If I remember correctly, in the Old Testament, they used to give people names based on who they were, their personality etc. Check the website below if you're curious.. and apparently 53% of people who voted liked the name. Nice..

Congee Wong/Congee Queen - the last little while I've been to this place way too much. Congee Queen is run by the same people who used to run the Congee Wong at Leslie & Finch. One day I had Congee Queen for Dinner, Congee Wong post-vball/Dinner Part 2, then Congee Queen again for lunch the next day. Surprisingly I wasn't sick of it.. Anyhow Congee Queen's gotten pretty entrepreneurial, they do party trays, have a wine menu and even have a website now..

Lastly, Christian Volleyball League (CVA) Playoffs are coming up soon... can't wait to play some good vball. There's a lot of pics up at the website for the league.. For playoffs, Semis are Nov 26th, Finals, Dec 3rd.. stop by if you want to watch. Location is posted on the website.

10.29.2005 - iBelieve & How much iPods REALLY cost( 1 comments ) Came across some interesting links.. one that tells you how much iPods actually cost to make. You won't believe how much they think Apple is making on these things.

The second link is for anyone who has an iPod shuffle.. you can.. ummm.. take up the cross daily and show people what you're listening to. It reminded me of some serious bling.. but only if it were gold coloured.

Also, played in the Scarborough men's vball league tonight for the first time.. sorta as a ringer but my buddies want to sign me up. We won all the games in our ladder so we move up to the next level.. good competition, fairly competitive... haven't played good vball like that in a while.

9.11.2005 - CVA, Weddings and Justis( 0 comments ) Yesterday was the first day of this year's volleyball league for the CVA (Christian Volleyball Association). This year we had teams from 12 churches... so pretty big. The double gym is nice, but not huge.. so we had a hard time packing everyone in. First day was a little hectic, but still good to see a lot of familiar faces and a lot of new faces as well.

Last weekend (In addition to the 9-man tourney) was the Toronto banquet for my god-sister's wedding. It's weird how sometimes you run across people from your past at random places. I walk into the Chinese restaurant in Mississauga and walk towards what was the wedding banquet. One of my friends (who I was pretty sure didn't know my god-sister) was at the reception table... so she says hi and asks how I know the bride/groom.. I tell her she's my god sister and ask how she knows them.. I look at the sign in table and there's some names I don't recognize. I peek in to see the greeting line and the Bride & Groom were NOT the right people. Luckily I didn't walk in. Anyhow, we were seated at a table with some people we didn't know. As the night went on, I realized one girl was very familiar.. and the name was very unique (Mary-Catherine)... our highschool was pretty small so everyone pretty much knew everyone else. She was married so her last name was changed... from the conversations we had it turned out she was from Hamilton. It turns out she was from my highschool a while back (and a few years older than me). We had a nice chat about past schoolmates, teachers and it turns out she found out one of our old english teachers (who sometimes had a cynical personality) was now a christian. Small world... and amazing to see how God brings people back from the past after so many years..

Lastly, Justis updated his website.. so go check it out. Funny thing is that one of the guys on my vball team Fred Lee, looks like Justis as well.. this only occured to me after he posted Justis's album cover as his MSN Pic!

9.01.2005 - CCSA Champs and Katrina Links( 0 comments ) Well, it's the first time I've won a championship in a while.. at least for a bigger league. So our team, "The Fellowship" ended up winning the CCSA (Chinese Christian Softball Association) league this year. I've been on the team for a few years, but this year we had new people join us and we switched our home church to NYCBC. Anyhow these guys were good, girls were really good as well.. it was a good season, and a little different mix of people. NYCBC has a history of making it to the finals.. I've included a link below.

Also, I've come across a number of Katrina related sites.. people are keeping blogs of this from various places. I'm not sure where they're getting the power from, but I'm guessing they're definetly not from New Orleans.. some interesting links and galleries below.

- bought a new desk from IKEA.. it's huge. Hopefully it won't get as messy
- Finally grabbed a webcam, hoping I can use it with my sis.. it's really hard to "show her stuff" over the phone. Picked it up from Amazon, the Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 was on sale..
- NACIVT - the big tourney is coming up in 1 1/2 weeks, it's going to be held at the Metro Convention Centre. Looking forward to playing indoors for once!

Also, one of my friends discovered this amazing popsicle bar that they sell at Ikea.. it's Pina Colada, with real pineapple chunks. These things are amazing.. but umm.. don't examine the nutritional value of them!

7.23.2005 - Friendster Revealed & Stolen Credit Cards( 0 comments ) I came across the link for this article on my friend Jason's site. It's pretty hilarious, and there's 3 parts to the article. It explains all about Friendster, what it is... and most importantly what everyone's gallery picture REALLY means.

That aside, we always hear about how Credit Card numbers are being stolen and people are gaining access to confidential information (or credit cards) through security breaches. Well, this time it's finally hit home.. I got a letter in the mail from my branch telling me that in the US, an unauthorized intruder gained access to some credit cards and that I was one of the "relatively small number of customers" who may have been impacted. Darn.. looks like I'll have to watch my statements more carefully now.. luckily I don't have very many pre-authorized payments sent up on it, that'd be a pain to fix..

7.20.2005 - NYC Trip .. and getting old( 2 comments ) Last weekend I went down to NYC for the New York Mini.. an annual vball tournament held in New York for the 9-man club teams. Our team did pretty well, but it was tough to get down there and back in a weekend. We left my house in the minivan around 11:30am, due to miscellaneous events along the way (people forgetting IDs, getting stopped at the border for documentation things as well as our van getting searched).. we didn't get into NY till 1:30am... and had to be on the courts around 7:30-8am the next morning. The trip was long but we had a TV and PS2 hooked up.. so that helped kill time.. we played some crazy vball game on the PS2. Our team did really well, made it to the semis and was close to taking a game from the top team.. The trip back was a different story, we ended up leaving around 8:30pm and had to drive overnight so most of us could make it back to work for Monday morning.. that was rough.. so that night when I got home from work I went to bed right away for a nap.. the time was 7:30pm. I ended up waking up at 8:30am the next morning.. a 13 hr "nap".. almost broke my sleep record of 13.5 hrs. Kinda scary since I didn't wake up for dinner or anything.

Anyhow, I'm older today.. enough said. I was going to stay on the down-low, but one person found out, then another person.. and then my friend Mary sent an email to the ENTIRE QA team saying it was my birthday and that she sent the email for trying to keep it a secret.. haha.. she's hilarious.. I was a little embarrassed, but appreciated everyone who stopped by.. The Accenture guys were also good to me as always with their crazy gifts and cake. At least this time I saw it coming. One interesting note, CIBC Wood Gundy sent me a birthday card.. I was a little surprised, but I guess if you invest money with them, they'll treat you well..anyhow I've included a link below to help guide you through Manhattan..

7.12.2005 - Grilled Meat is Carcinogenic? And an 18 foot home-built robot..( 3 comments ) Came across these on a site.. the first is a story about one man's quest to build a "Mech-Robot". Some huge metal 18 foot robot that some guy is selling on eBay for $40,000. Oh wait, there's a $8,000 shipping fee as well.

Secondly, there's an article on grilling of meats and how if you grill at high temperatures, it's more likely to be carcinogenic. Nothing really new, but it looks like I might have to cut down on BBQ.

7.06.2005 - Google Earth, TTC Riders and other links( 1 comments ) Google has come up with the MapQuest killer.. Google Earth. They acquired a company that did satellite images and combined it with their search technology to create this new app. You can use the web based version or download a copy to your desktop. The one you download is pretty crazy.. saw some guy at work use it and was pretty amazed.

Also, I came across an interesting article on Clibby's site, a couple my sis and I met at my god-sister's wedding. It has an interesting article about Christian guys.. and actual relates to some of discussions that happened at the men's retreat for our church.

If you ride the TTC a lot, check out the site called TTC Riders and you'll make sure you never spend a second extra on the TTC. This site is totally crazy... for those people who are obsessed about efficiency. They have these crazy maps to help plan the optimal route through the TTC system.

6.27.2005 - The Future - Smaller Cars?( 0 comments ) With the price of gas increasing.. and the fact that most trips are fairly short (and have one person in the car), it makes sense that there's starting to be a market towards smaller cars.. Most of you have seen the SmartCar, but there's also the new B-Class by Mercedes.

Some other cars in the past, include the Sinclair C5, Sinclair C6.. and other cars feathered in a microcar museum. The Sparrow is another example of such a car, categorized as a motorcycle and can be used in the high-density carpool lanes.

6.26.2005 - Update & Places around Toronto( 0 comments ) Summer is always busy.. so I've been guilty of not blogging, with all these other things going on, like 9-man, softball, weddings etc. Last week I did my first "Amazing Race".. my friends Andy & Euming did one for their Jack & Jill, so I took part. It was actually pretty good, with a theme on reality shows. We had to Sing songs (Canadian Idol) to win the tasks, look for bugs (Fear Factor), sell chocolate bars for money (The Apprentice) among other tasks...

For places around Toronto, I've been told of this one place that specializes in Cupcakes.. reminds me of the ones my god-sister had at her wedding. 6.21.2005 - Wink Singles(previously known as the "Wingman") and LeaseBuster( 2 comments ) Haven't blogged in a little while, but I came across these two interesting business in the Metro (TTC). First one is if you're in a car lease and want to get out.. this company will help other people take over your lease. It's generally pretty hard to find someone to do this.... an interesting business idea, but I'm not sure how many people will use it.

Secondly, there's a company called "Wink Girls". The usual idea is that you go out with your Wingman, who helps you out. The idea is that girls are more comfortable when another girl introduces the guy. So rather than ONE wingman, you have two or three "Wink Singles". Enough said..

6.12.2005 - Toronto Taste!( 2 comments ) Went to volunteer at Toronto Taste today.. for those that haven't heard of it, basically it's a bunch of little booths by a lot of the higher end restaurants, bakery etc for people to taste the food. However, tickets are about $200-300 to go in and sample. What you get is basically free samplings of duck, deserts, wine, oysters.. a lot of good food. Anyhow I got my first taste of being a waiter today.. well, more like a bus-boy. Anyhow I volunteered and spent most of the day picking up wine glasses, plates etc. It's not as bad as it sounds... I decided to go all out.. even had the napkin on my arm like all the REAL waiters/waitresses have. Also, I got some necklace/beads from Ruth Chris's steakhouse. 6.08.2005 - Mel and Jer's Wedding & Vancouver( 0 comments ) My godsister got married in Vancouver last week and I had the privledge of being there to be a part of the wedding. I don't know much about Vancouver.. only been there once or twice before and we did most of the touristy things before. Anyhow the wedding was at the Brock House at UBC. A very nice venue for a wedding, actually it's ranked fairly high as one of the top places to have a wedding in BC. Kudos to Mel & Jer for picking the place.. also it was an outdoor wedding, great weather, sun was out as well. It was a little different than most weddings since I didn't know that many ppl there (locals from Vancouver).. but there were some of the relatives I've met and other ppl from Toronto. The wedding reception was also at Brock House.. all I remember were Cliff and Libby at the table, who seemed to be entertained by my antics.. they even got some of it on Video (hopefully it never makes it onto the Internet like the Star Wars Kid).

We stayed at a room in UBC, not one of the res rooms, but some of the rooms they have for the conferences they hold there. It was near Walter Gray hall, called West Coast Suites or something similar. Only thing I didn't like was the housekeeping that ALWAYS came at 9am in the morning... who on earth has housekeeping come at that time? One day we put the "do not disturb" sign on and they didn't bother us. When we left around 11am to head out, we flipped it to the "make room" sign on the other side. Later on we came back in the afternoon to nap... we were all so exhausted that we didn't even notice the room hadn't been touched since we left. So we take our naps.. half an hour later, house keeping barges in our room, then proceeds to yell at us that we had the "make room" sign up when it should be "do not disturb". I proceed to tell them that we left and came back already to take a nap.... it's not my fault they didn't come by earlier to clean it and we were too tired to remember to flip the sign back. Needless to say they proceeded to knock on our door the next morning at 9am!

We stopped by a few malls in Vancouver.. some of them like Aberdeen mall in Richmond were crazy.. typical asian mall, like Pac Mall, but much more extravagant. Anyhow we went to this other huge mall in Burnaby called Metropolis or Metrotown. I couldn't believe how many asian ppl there were...

anyhow I've included links below to a number of the sites above, the mall, Brock House, etc. My sis somehow also came across Cliff & Libby's blog.. turns out she somehow had met Libby's BROTHER!

6.01.2005 - Richmond BC - Chinatown of Canada( 6 comments ) I was in Richmond BC this week.. and man, there are a ton of chinese people here. I went to this new huge asian mall called Aberdeen Centre. Anyhow it was nice to see some old friends in Vancouver I haven't seen for a while. I saw Chris, Nathalie, Kernby and Erin, all of whom I haven't seen for at least a few years. It was good to chill with some Shads again, reminding me of the potential we have if you can get the right group of people together. Anyhow the weather here is somewhat weird. It can rain 5 times a day, 15-20 minutes at a time, with lots of sun in between. However I finally understand why everything in Vancouver is so green. It's because it rains all the time! I have some pics I want to post.. but I'll put them up later. Some interesting stories about the flight to Vancouver and some good pics!

5.26.2005 - Chicago, Willowcreek, and White Castle( 2 comments ) Last week I went to Chicago because of training for work. It was an interesting week, an a week of many first. I finally got the chance to visit Willowcreek Community Church, a large church outside of Chicago. It took my friend and I a little while to actually find the place and it was the first time Mapquest let us down. The directions it gave us were completely off.. by at least 5-10 miles! Anyhow the church was huge.. almost like a university campus. It had a cafeteria, gym, auditorium that ift at least 10,000 people.. and even it's own lake!

We also had a hard time deciding on where to eat, but we came across a White Castle and we knew it was the place to go. I ended up eating.. two chicken burgers, two double white castles (basically a double-burger), a fish burger, onion rings and fries. Came out to $10 US.. pretty pricey stuff!

Also went to Woodfield mall.. I'd been there before last time I was in Chicago and it was pretty good this time around as well. With the Nike TO race coming up, I also did some training.. haven't run in a long long time.. hopefully I'll survive the 10km this Sunday. Also, our training was at the Q Center.. a training center used by many companies, including PriceWaterhouseCooper and Navigant Consulting.

I'm hoping to put some pictures in the media gallery up later next week.. we'll see...
